With a year's research and four enthusiastic family members, Prince Edward Island Spice Merchants was launched in November 1996 at the PEI Expo. "We only had four bottled spice blends and a packaged sample of a fifth one", says owner Karen Murray "But we were the busiest booth at the Expo that year. We had people returning time and again to taste our samples."
Murray explains that the Prince Edward Island Spice Merchants' focus has always been on high quality spice and herb blends, low in salt, and developed for use with indigenous PEI products (where possible). This focus has led to the current nine-product listing, including Potato Pizzazz potato seasoning, Malpeque Bay seafood seasoning, Incredible Chicken poultry seasoning, Beef & Pork Spice Rub, Garden Vegetable dip seasoning, Salad & Potato Toss, Montreal Steak Spice, Chile Fix, Summer Savoury and Sea Salt.
While Prince Edward Island Spice Merchants has traditionally marketed to Canadian gift and specialty shops, their consumer base has since become global. "We've had enquiries from Israel as well as the United Kingdom and have a healthy market in the United States, says Murray. They'll call looking for our spice products; we end up chatting and eventually build a rapport. People have said they like the personal contact. It's the way we do business."
In their continued efforts to offer quality products to its customers, Prince Edward Island Spice Merchants are currently developing five new dip blends under their own label and three blends to be marketed under the Food Trust label. As well, in order to strengthen customer service, they are developing a website that will allow them to market their products to a global consumer base.
